We are not exactly sisters (though our family lines, we have discovered, cross no less than four times)–we are inseparable friends who have been separated by a distance of some miles for most of our friendship. Often we are compared to various and sundry literary pairs*, but bear most markedly a resemblance to the Dashwood sisters, both in corresponding temperaments and in sisterly devotion.
At present we are both single young women with little inheritance to live on, finding our way in the world as best we can, with the nagging suspicion that we are unwitting characters in a quirky romantic comedy…playing the bizarre, mortifying, and terribly funny “best friend” scenes before the romance really begins. We thirst for adventure, we have perfected the art of creme brulee, we read and quote poetry unabashedly, and we are connoisseurs of costume drama. It’s a wonderful friendship.
*Anne and Diana is a frequent comparison, but this one draws a grimace, since neither of us wishes to be Diana and end up marrying boring old Fred. We once dressed up as Margaret and Helen Schlegel from Howards End for Halloween. Marianne thinks we could be the Hardy Boys, too, if only we weren’t, you know, girls.
Amazing women.
